EOUMB Alumni Band Story by Adnett Tomlinson, DSU Senior

Delaware State University vs The University of Delaware

The Blue Hens of the University of Delaware beat the Fighting Hornets of Delaware State University 22-3 for the First State Cup at NEWARK, Delaware on August 31, 2017. That's the football game story.

The East Orange Unified Marching Band (EOUMB) is the collective group of band members from East Orange, NJ, participating at Delaware State University with 12 Alumni members. With so many participants from different sections in the DSU band, a group photo was impossible to manage. The experience of the football game for the newer members of the band was not reflected in the score of the game (we lost). Last year none of the newer EOUMB members had performed at a DSU football game. As stated by our EOUMB members, this first game of the season was one of the most exciting experiences of their lives (so in that sense, we won!). Perfoming to the largest football crowd many of them had ever seen, cheering and celebrating was a memory that will live on forever.

Newest Members Rael Cherry and Deon Thompson joined Dominique Turnage, Joshua Reserve, Jorge Vega, Natalie Tomlinson, Adnett Tomlinson, Desmond Drake, Nneka Ajaghanna, and Amanda George. Not attending the game was Alumnus Denzel Thompson, who is focusing on graduate studies, and Alumnus Neil Davis, who is working on his senior studies but will return once he has settled into the end of his undergraduate case-load. Adnett had to pause from her participation in the DSU Band to take photos, so she was unable to capture all the exciting faces of the members in their new uniforms for the first time. She will try to add to the photo collection as soon as possible.

You will notice that some of the members of the band are holding up hand signs. These signs represents the fraternal organizations of which they now are members. Adnett, for example, is a member of the Sorority Sigma Gamma Rho Inc. which is a national Greek organization whose mission is to enhance the quality of the lives of women and their families through community service, civil, and social actions.

Currently Adnett’s Sorority is helping the victims of hurricane Harvey in Texas, where, as you may recall, EOUMB member Allan Theodore is attending Praire View A&M University, and Bria Douglas is serving as one of the Alto High School Band Directors. Fortunately, neither of these Texas schools was directly affected by the hurricane.
